Learn how to choose the right dissertation methodology. Compare qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods and find the best approach for your research question.

Choosing a dissertation methodology is one of those jobs that looks simple until you actually have to do it.

You may have a research topic you like, a few research questions written down and dozens of journal articles saved on your laptop. Then comes the difficult part: How am I actually going to investigate this?

That is where methodology comes in.

I have found that the easiest way to approach the decision is to stop thinking about methodology as a box you need to tick. Instead, think of it as the logic behind your research. Your methodology should explain how you intend to answer your research question, why your chosen approach makes sense, and what you will do with the evidence you collect.

There is no universal “best” dissertation methodology. The right choice depends on your question, subject area, available data, resources, ethical requirements and the type of answer you are trying to produce.

What Does Dissertation Methodology Actually Mean?

A dissertation methodology is more than a description of your research methods.

Your methods tell the reader what you are going to do. Your methodology explains why you are doing it that way.

For example, saying that you will conduct 15 interviews tells me something about your method. It does not yet tell me why interviews are appropriate, why those participants were selected, how the interviews will be analysed or how the approach helps answer your research question.

A well-developed methodology normally covers several connected decisions:

  • Research philosophy or assumptions
  • Research approach
  • Research design
  • Sampling
  • Data collection
  • Data analysis
  • Ethical considerations
  • Quality and trustworthiness
  • Limitations

That connection between the different decisions is important. A dissertation becomes much easier to defend when you can show a clear line from your research question to your methodology and then from your methodology to your conclusions.

The American Psychological Association's Journal Article Reporting Standards, for example, provide separate guidance for quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research, with an emphasis on transparent reporting.

Start With the Research Question

If you remember only one thing from this article, make it this:

Do not choose your methodology first. Choose it because of your research question.

Imagine your dissertation is about students' experiences with artificial intelligence in higher education.

A question such as:

How do university students describe their experiences of using generative AI for academic work?

is mainly concerned with experiences and perceptions.

A qualitative approach could therefore be appropriate.

Now consider a different question:

Is there a relationship between students' frequency of generative AI use and their academic performance?

That question involves measurable variables and a relationship between them. A quantitative approach may make more sense.

A third question could be:

To what extent does generative AI use influence students' academic performance, and how do students explain its impact?

Now you potentially have two different kinds of evidence to work with. A mixed-methods design might be justified.

The subject has not changed very much. The research question has.

And that change can completely alter the appropriate methodology.

Qualitative Research: When You Need Depth

I would normally consider qualitative research when the real issue is understanding people's experiences, interpretations, motivations or perceptions.

Typical qualitative methods include:

  • Semi-structured interviews
  • Focus groups
  • Observation
  • Document analysis
  • Case studies
  • Narrative research

Suppose you want to understand why employees resist the introduction of new workplace technology.

A questionnaire could give you useful numbers, but interviews might uncover concerns that you did not anticipate when designing the questionnaire. One participant might be worried about job security; another might be frustrated by inadequate training; someone else might simply dislike the new system.

That depth is one of the major strengths of qualitative research.

It also means that qualitative research should not be treated as the “easy option.” Analysing interviews properly can be time-consuming. You have to make decisions about coding, interpretation and how your own position as a researcher affects the analysis.

When interviews make sense

Interviews are particularly useful when you want participants to explain:

  • What they experienced
  • How they interpreted an event
  • Why they made a particular decision
  • How they feel about an issue
  • How a process works from their perspective

But don't automatically assume that interviews are appropriate just because your dissertation is qualitative.

Your research question should still drive the decision.

Quantitative Research: When Measurement Matters

Quantitative research is a better fit when your research depends on numerical information.

You might want to measure:

  • The frequency of a behaviour
  • Differences between groups
  • Relationships between variables
  • Changes over time
  • The effect of an intervention
  • Levels of satisfaction or performance

For example:

Does employee training frequency predict job satisfaction?

You could turn training frequency and job satisfaction into measurable variables, collect data from an appropriate sample and use statistical analysis to investigate the relationship.

The important word here is appropriate.

There is little value in collecting hundreds of responses if your questionnaire does not measure the concepts you are interested in or your statistical analysis does not match the research question.

APA's reporting standards for quantitative research specifically address issues such as participant characteristics, measures, data diagnostics and analytical strategies.

So, if you choose quantitative research, think beyond “I'll send out a survey.” Ask yourself what you need to measure, how you will measure it and what you intend to do with the resulting data.

Mixed Methods: Don't Use It Just to Look More Impressive

Mixed methods combines quantitative and qualitative research within one study.

It can be extremely useful, but it also adds another layer of planning.

Imagine you survey 300 university students about online learning. The results show that a significant proportion are dissatisfied with their learning experience.

You now know how many students are dissatisfied.

But perhaps you want to understand why.

You could follow the survey with interviews involving a smaller group of students. The interviews could help explain patterns in the quantitative results.

That is a meaningful reason to combine methods.

On the other hand, saying “I will use questionnaires and interviews to make the research more comprehensive” is not enough.

You need to explain how the two forms of evidence relate to each other.

If the quantitative and qualitative parts of the project simply sit next to each other without being meaningfully connected, you have created extra work without necessarily creating a stronger study.

Your Research Design Comes Next

Once you have decided on the broad approach, you need to think about the actual design of the study.

There are several possibilities.

Surveys

Surveys are useful when you need standardised information from a larger number of respondents.

They are particularly helpful for questions involving attitudes, behaviours, preferences and measurable characteristics.

The drawback is that a structured questionnaire can restrict the answers participants are able to give.

If you don't already know the important dimensions of an issue, a survey may therefore be less useful than an exploratory qualitative approach.

Interviews

Semi-structured interviews provide a useful middle ground.

You can prepare a set of questions so that participants discuss broadly similar topics, while still allowing them to explain something unexpected.

This can work particularly well for dissertations investigating experiences, professional practices and perceptions.

Case studies

A case study allows you to examine a particular case in detail.

The case might be:

  • A company
  • A school
  • A project
  • A policy
  • A community
  • A particular implementation of a technology

The key is defining the boundaries of the case.

“The impact of social media on businesses” is enormous.

“The adoption of Instagram marketing by independent fashion retailers in one city” gives you something much more manageable.

Systematic reviews

Not every dissertation requires primary data.

Depending on your programme and research question, you might conduct a systematic review or another form of structured evidence synthesis.

This requires more than searching Google Scholar and summarising papers.

You need a transparent strategy for identifying relevant studies, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and synthesising the evidence.

The EQUATOR Network identifies PRISMA and its extensions as major reporting guidance for systematic reviews and related evidence syntheses.

Think About Feasibility Before You Commit

This is where I would urge you to be brutally realistic.

A methodology might look excellent on paper and still be a terrible choice for your circumstances.

Before finalising your research design, ask yourself:

Can I actually get the data?

If your study requires access to 500 senior managers, do you genuinely have a route to those participants?

If your research requires confidential company records, has the organisation agreed to provide them?

If you need interviews, can you recruit enough suitable participants within your deadline?

If you need specialist statistical software, do you have access to it?

And, perhaps most importantly, do you have enough time to analyse everything you plan to collect?

A smaller study that you can execute carefully is generally preferable to an ambitious study that falls apart halfway through.

Sampling Is Part of the Methodology

Don't leave sampling until the last minute.

Your sample should follow from your research question and study design.

For qualitative research, you might use purposive sampling because you specifically need participants with relevant characteristics or experience.

For quantitative research, the sampling strategy needs to support the type of analysis you intend to perform and the population you want to discuss.

The exact requirements vary considerably between disciplines, so there is no magic number of participants that makes a dissertation “valid.”

That's why copying the sample size from another student's dissertation is risky.

Their research question, population, design and analysis may be completely different from yours.

Don't Forget Research Ethics

Ethics should be considered while designing the study—not added as an afterthought.

If your dissertation involves human participants, think carefully about:

  • Informed consent
  • Confidentiality
  • Anonymisation
  • Data storage
  • Participant withdrawal
  • Potential harm
  • Sensitive information
  • Vulnerable participants
  • Conflicts of interest

Your university's ethics procedures should be your primary reference because requirements differ between institutions and disciplines.

You should also check whether your chosen research design has particular ethical considerations. For example, researching sensitive personal experiences requires a different level of planning from an anonymous questionnaire about general consumer preferences.

Where Research Philosophy Fits In

At some point, you will probably encounter terms such as positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism, constructivism and critical realism.

This can be the part of the methodology chapter where students start throwing complicated terminology at the page because they think it makes the research sound more academic.

It doesn't.

Research philosophy is useful when it helps explain the assumptions behind your research.

If you're investigating how people interpret their experiences, you may need a different philosophical position from someone testing a measurable relationship between variables.

The goal isn't to include every philosophical term you've encountered.

The goal is to explain the assumptions that actually matter to your study.

A Simple Way to Choose Your Methodology

If you're currently staring at your dissertation proposal wondering where to begin, try this process.

1. Write down the question

Write your main research question at the top of a page.

Then ask:

What exactly am I trying to find out?

If your question is vague, fix it before worrying about methodology.

2. Decide what evidence you need

Do you need people's experiences?

You may need qualitative data.

Do you need measurements and statistical relationships?

You may need quantitative data.

Do you need both?

Mixed methods may be worth considering.

Do you only need existing research?

A review-based approach could be appropriate.

3. Choose the research design

Now decide whether a survey, interview study, case study, experiment, review or another design fits the question.

4. Check whether you can actually do it

This is the reality check.

Consider your deadline, budget, access to participants, available data, technical skills and ethical approval.

5. Explain why you made each decision

For every major choice, complete this sentence:

“I selected this approach because…”

If the explanation sounds weak, investigate the decision again.

That's a surprisingly effective way to identify problems in a methodology before they become problems in the dissertation.

Five Common Mistakes Students Make

Choosing a methodology because someone else used it

Another dissertation is not a template for your research.

The fact that someone successfully used interviews does not mean interviews are right for your question.

Assuming qualitative research requires less work

It doesn't.

Reading transcripts, developing codes, interpreting patterns and presenting evidence carefully can take a considerable amount of time.

Adding mixed methods unnecessarily

If your research question can be answered properly with one approach, there may be no reason to add another.

More methods do not automatically mean better research.

Being vague about data analysis

Don't write “the data will be analysed appropriately.”

Explain what you intend to do.

For qualitative research, identify the analytical approach you plan to use. For quantitative research, explain the statistical techniques you expect to apply and why they fit the data and research questions.

Ignoring limitations

Every methodology has limitations.

Your sample might be small. Your participants might come from one organisation. Your data could be self-reported. Your study may only examine one geographical area.

Acknowledging these limitations does not make your research look weak.

Pretending they don't exist does.

Use Established Reporting Guidance

One practical step I recommend is checking whether there is an established reporting guideline for your type of study.

The EQUATOR Network maintains a large library of research reporting guidelines and currently lists hundreds of guidelines across different study types. Its main categories include PRISMA for systematic reviews, STROBE for observational studies, CONSORT for randomised trials, and SRQR and COREQ for qualitative research. 

These guidelines are not a substitute for your university's methodology requirements.

Think of them as a quality-control tool.

They can help you notice important details that you might otherwise overlook.

For qualitative research, for example, the SRQR framework was developed specifically to improve the transparency of qualitative research reporting. 

What a Strong Methodology Should Look Like

A good methodology chapter should read like a logical argument.

For example:

My research question explores how postgraduate students experience remote learning.

From that question, you might decide:

I need detailed accounts of individual experiences.

Which leads to:

A qualitative approach is appropriate.

Then:

I will conduct semi-structured interviews.

Then:

Participants will be selected using purposive sampling because they need direct experience of remote postgraduate study.

Then:

The interview data will be analysed using an appropriate thematic approach.

Then:

Ethical procedures will protect participant identity and confidentiality.

Every decision has a reason.

That's the real goal.

Your examiner should not have to guess why you made your methodological choices.

Where to Get Reliable Methodology Guidance

When researching your methodology, I'd avoid building your chapter around random dissertation blogs and generic “top 10 research methods” articles.

Start with recognised academic and professional sources.

The APA's Journal Article Reporting Standards cover quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research and are designed to improve clarity and transparency.

The EQUATOR Network provides a searchable library of reporting guidelines for different research designs.

For your actual dissertation, you should also use the methodological textbooks and peer-reviewed literature that are recognised within your subject area. Your supervisor can be particularly valuable here because they understand your department's expectations and the conventions of your discipline.

Getting Help Without Losing Your Own Academic Voice

Sometimes you don't need someone to tell you which methodology to choose. You need help working through the reasoning.

That distinction matters.

  • Have I considered ethics?
  • Have I checked my university's requirements?
  • Have I identified the main limitations?
  • Am I using credible methodological sources?
  • Could another researcher understand what I intend to do from my methodology chapter?

If the answer is yes, you're in a much stronger position.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a dissertation methodology isn't about finding the method that sounds most complicated or most impressive.

It's about finding the approach that makes sense for the question you are asking.

Start with the problem. Turn it into a focused research question. Decide what evidence you actually need. Then choose a design that can produce that evidence within the time, resources and ethical boundaries of your project.
